In the earlier two excavations, Purana Qila in Delhi was established to have a continuous habitation of 2500 years. It was Identified as ancient settlement of Indraprastha. The site is going to be excavated again shortly for the third time to accomplish the traces of Painted Grey Ware finding in stratigraphical context. Painted Grey-Ware (PGW) culture dates to Iron Age (c. 1200–600 BCE).
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is to begin Excavation at Purana Qila again for the third time. The aim of this season’s excavation is to accomplish the traces of Painted Grey Ware finding in stratigraphical context.
The earlier two seasons of excavations were in the years 2013-14 and 2017-18 when evidence of layers predating the Mauryan period was found. Key artifacts unearthed was painted grey ware, belonging to 900 BC. A continuous habitation of 2500 years was established and the site was Identified as ancient settlement of Indraprastha.
During the third season of excavation which is to commence shortly, focus would be to accomplish the traces of Painted Grey Ware finding in stratigraphical context.
Painted Grey-Ware (PGW) dates to Iron Age c. 1200–600 BCE. This was preceded by the Cemetery H culture (a Bronze Age culture, about 1900 – 1300 BC) and Black and red ware BRW (c.1450 – 1200 BCE).
Painted Grey Ware culture was followed by Mahajanapadas.
