Makar Sankranti is being celebrated across India
Known by different names in different regions, the day marks the transition of the Sun from the zodiac of Sagittarius (dhanu) to Capricorn (makara).

The Sun is regarded to have moved northwards (Uttarayan ) from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere on this day in the Hindu calendar.
The PM, Modi has greeted the people on the occasion of Uttarayan. In a tweet, he said;
“Greetings on Uttarayan. May there be abundance of joy in our lives.”
The Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is on the last leg his Bharat Jodo Yatra, also wished on the this occasion.
